LEQ,1hr : Indicator that represents the integrated sound energy over a period of 1 hour in this case. Corresponds to the level of continuous noise that would have the same energy as the fluctuating sound level measured for 1 hour.
Jet noise has been removed from data.

LEQ,5min : Indicator that represents the integrated sound energy over a period of 5 minutes in this case. Corresponds to the level of continuous noise that would have the same energy as the fluctuating sound level measured for 5 minutes.
Jet noise has been removed from data.

Measuring unit (dBA) :

The intensity of the sound is measured in decibels (dB) by a device called sound level meter. This device measures the entire range of frequencies, even those which the human ear perceives less well. In order for noise measurement to better correspond to human perception, filter A is used, which will give less importance to the sounds we hear less well. The decibel A (dBA) is a unit that allows to take into account the capacities of our ear, which perceives the acute sounds better than the bass sounds. However, the dBA is a unit of measurement that is not linear but logarithmic. For example, the sound level should increase by 10 dBA to appear twice as strong.

Sound level reports

At the end of each month, noise exceedance reports are automatically generated and available for download in PDF file format.

For each measurements location, a pair of reports indicate the hours in which the average sound level exceeded either (i) 60 dBA at any time of the day and (ii) 55 dBA during the daytime and 50 dBA during the nighttime. Noise from jets has been excluded from the calculations, but all other sources (Levi’s Stadium, 49ers activities, local traffic, etc.) are included.

The noise exceedance reports are based upon two sets of criteria.

  • The reports that use a maximum noise level of 60 dBA correspond to the maximum noise level established in a Permit issued by the City for the operation of Levi’s© Stadium. The 60 dBA Reports identify times when noise levels within the neighborhood exceeded the standard for events at the stadium.
  • The reports that use a maximum noise level of 55 dBA (daytime) or 50 dBA (night time) correspond to the City’s general noise standards and identify times when noise levels within the neighborhood exceeded the City’s general standard for noise levels from a fixed source.

It should be noted that in many instances noise levels from airplanes, garbage pick-up, gardening, or other activities may exceed these noise levels but are not regulated by the ordinance which only applies to fixed sources such as mechanical equipment installations.
